After a one-week hiatus, New Beer Friday returns to old form with a very healthy list of new arrivals. Particularly exciting this week is the swing-top bottles of Altenmunster Festbier. Is it good beer? Sure it's good beer. But making it something to write home about is its giant size. This beer tips the scales at two full liters, and that happens to be the cutoff point for a little something we like to call just plain awesome. Coincidence? Yes, more than likely.
New (and Returning) Beer
- Altenmunster Festbier, $17.19/2ltr - This is two liters of beer in a super cool swing-top bottle. Honestly, what more do you need to know?
- Shipyard Pumpkin Head, $1.79/12oz - "Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale is a crisp and refreshing wheat ale with delightful aromatics and subtle spiced flavor" (source).
- Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin, $10.19/22oz - "A big-bodied beer with a light coppery orange color and pleasing aroma of pumpkin and nutmeg. The OG and final Alc./Vol. provide the structure and body. Pale Ale, Wheat and Light Munich Malts combine with the natural tannin in pumpkin and the delicate spiciness of Willamette and Hallertau Hops to balance the sweetness of the fruit. To fully enjoy all the flavors, this ale is best drunk at 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Smashed Pumpkin pairs well with sharp cheeses, nuts, lamb, hearty stews and desserts like flan or pumpkin pie. Chefs find this an excellent beer to cook with in dishes such as braised short ribs" (source).
- Short's Beach Wheat, $1.69/12oz - "Classic wheat beer brewed by Americans in America using a German wheat yeast. 50% of the grain used is malted wheat designating it as a true “wheat” beer. This ale is also known as Hefeweizen. It’s golden in color and light and clean with esters of banana and clove compliments of its Bavarian DNA" (source).
- He'Brew Hop Manna IPA, $5.79/22oz - "Behold: A celebration of the flower of the craft beer revolution! A golden opportunity to feed your inner hop head and rejoice in HOP MANNA, our newest delicacy of the modern He’brew Beer family. L’Chaim! Dry Hopped with Centennial, Cascade and Citra" (source).
- Stone Ruination 10th Anniversary IPA, $7.69/12oz - "Stone Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA was created as an homage to the almighty hop. As the celebrated Stone Ruination IPA approached its 10th birthday this June, we knew we had to do something special, so we cranked it up from 7.7% to 10.8% and used twice as much hops–a whopping 5 pounds per barrel, including a pound each of Citra and Centennial in the dry hop. The results were GLORIOUS, but don't take our word for it. The only people more bitter than those who don't get any...will be those who do" (source).
- Newcastle Werewolf Blood Red Ale, $1.49/12oz - "At first smooth with mellow overtones of sweet berry fruit, a bite of bitterness suddenly cuts through, long, deep and lingering. Brewed with Rye Malt, it is naturally "blood red" in colour. Unlike the mythical wolf-like creature said to roam the bleak moorland surrounding Newcastle, this is real, so consider yourself warned!" (source).
- Timmerman's Oude Gueze, $14.59, 750ml - "Oude Gueuze is an appellation controlee: its label is protected. It is also known as the champagne of beers, especially as it is only available as a limited edition. Timmermans® Oude Gueuze’s special flavour derives from its time-honored method of preparation. It is a blend of old lambic, which has been aged for three years in wooden barrels, and young lambic which ensures spontaneous fermentation in the bottle. The different lambics are carefully selected by the brewer to obtain a perfect flavour. After it has been produced, Timmermans Oude Gueuze, which is refermented for four months in the bottle, continues to improve for 20 years" (source).
Cheers!
